Hello all! I started learning cw about a week or two ago on an app on my phone, avoiding mnemonics. I've been playing drums for forever, so morse code has been interesting bc it taps into the part of my brain that remembers rhythms (Q particularly is a fun one). Is it potentially harmful to me to be remembering them like that? thank you!

V is another one. It actually helps to memorize the rhythm—if you can hear it cleanly, you’ve got my envy.

My guess, it's not about memorizing anything, other than having your brain recognize, at an instant, that hearing dah dah dit dah is Q, much like, you can hear, english, and not think, something like "kah you", that's Q.

I just got started a few weeks ago. For me, if I catch myself even thinking... wait, what was that di dah dit or was it dah dit dah.. I know I have a problem and try some things like increasing letter speed, and trying hard to recognize the letter faster and faster. Obviously, as a drummer, you already have the ear for it, like, hey, that's a paradiddle, that's triple whatever. Translate this instant recognition (without counting in your head) and then you will master it.

Good Luck!

I have trouble with rhythm, that's why I play Psychedelic Rock, its more about feeling the timing. I'm making flash cards to help give me a visual along side the tone. I found that to be the most impactful for me.

I've been messing around with CW for about 3 weeks. It's SO hard. I'm 71 with bad hearing and have to say that this is one of the hardest things I've ever try to learn. I'll figure it out, but it may take me a long time.
