I think this happens to all of us. Nowadays, most practice is done using a computer. In any case, I don’t think this is a problem, since the goal is head copy: without a keyboard, without paper or pencil (except perhaps to write down the callsign and name).

The idea is not to copy character by character, but to recognize whole words. Some words are very easy to identify because they have a distinctive, easily recognizable melody, while others are more difficult, even after hearing them many times.

Copying character by character is just an intermediate step on the way to achieving head copy.
