Hi,

what is the best way to start learning CW concerning the Koch vs. the Farnsworth method? I read that using the Farnsworth method, some could find it harder to make cleartext QSO later on, because you didn't learn to skip letters you don't recognize because of the Farnsworth-Spacing. On the other hand, starting out with 12/12 WpM, its somehow really frustrating repeating the same lesson over and over again.

Any advice on how to proceed as a beginner?
Thanks in advance!

Yannick DK8YS

Hi Yannick,

For your reference only.

Ignore "some could find it harder to make cleartext QSO later on" There will be no "later on" if you cannot learn the code in the first place.

At stage 1(learn the morse code letters), choose m/n wpm while m,n = whatever you can proceed without feeling frustrated.

As soon as you passing stage 1, you can set speed to i/i to get the correct morse code rhythms.

Just follow the instructions on:
https://lcwo.net/courseintro

This course has both Koch and Farnsworth built in.

Start, as recommended, with 20/15. Starting at 12 wpm makes no sense, unless you want to listen to the resident sockpuppets on this forum.

Your first para sounds a bit complicated for someone just starting out. If you are a complete beginner, my advice would be to start at the beginning :) Work your way through the lessons as they are and do extra practice on the morse machine. It may be frustrating repeating the same things over and over again (I feel exactly the same about my piano!) but that's the way you learn and unfortunately there is no quick fix. The whole course is brilliant, in fact this whole website is brilliant. Just persevere, practice at least a little every day and eventually it will all fall into place. Good luck.

KOCH - 20x15 start on lesson 1, after 90% or above, on to lesson 2, and so on. For me this is was quite challenging, and at times frustrating. But I can tell you it works. I have said this before and I will say it again, lessons 1-40 at 20x15 took me 1 year and 10 months. Hopefully you can stick with it and conquer this faster than I did. You will find these same instruction at https://lcwo.net/courseintro as a previous post said. This is good advice, and has a proven track record. Best of luck!
