My problem is copying in handwriting what I am hearing in 5 letter sets at 20 WPM effective 10. My writing starts me lagging and soon I’m too far behind to copy so I just focus again but loose a couple sets of letters.
Any hints for handwriting to match code speed?

If you don't know shorthand then you have a choice of increasing the gap between the sets of five letters

or something along the lines of

speaking the decoded letters into a recording device then playing back in slo-mo as you type the letters into the box.

I'm guessing you can't touch type without thinking about it . . .

John,

please try writing behind. Try with a few seconds of write behind buffer first, then increase at your ease.

Your other problem may simple be that your training speed is higher than what you can copy. Slowing down is the solution. Increase later, be patient.

Try writing smaller letters, 3 - 3.5 mm
