Having what I consider to be a kind of funny problem. I am trying to learn at about 22 wpm character speed and effective speed of 12 wpm for the time being. The problem I'm having is when hearing the code for "R" I hear the word "banana" instead and then have to take the moment to translate that in my head from banana to R and also try to get the follow up characters too. I'm sure I'll get over this with practice but I thought it was a funny problem that I wanted to share.

well I can tell you that many times when introduced with a new letter I forgot 2 or 3 previous characters I thought I knew. Never associated a letter with fruit or any other word, so that is a strange problem. Best of luck with your CW journey.

Hope I didn't spread the bug. It's crazy but I really am struggling with it, lol. When I'm in several seconds and hear an "R" it causes a blip in my brain that causes it to lag for just long enough to ruin the string. Kind of like when you see one of the optical illusion pictures and once you start seeing the alternate image you can't see the original one. I've been repeating lesson 5 over and over and have switched to random lengths and that seems to be helping.

One of big benefits in learning Morse for me is learning at the same time about how many weird tricks my brain can play on me. Most of them are about its inherent laziness. But the "R-banana issue" is definitely a new one. :)

In the olden days - pre training records and probably even before nonag - these "mnemonics" were a popular "short cut" to learning the letters.

I expect they prevented many an enthusiastic boy-scout from actually learning - but that's short-cuts for you.

They still feature in youtube "I learned morse code in 10 minutes" vids

Here's a Wikipedia page of things to avoid . . .
