I have tried to copy the five-letter groups in my head with some success. When does head copy come easy? Is it a slow progression or an all-of-a-sudden?

Head copy is afaik not of use for code groups, but essential for copy of plain text messages.
Exercise it with the WORDS chapter of this website, regular spaced between the characters of the words.

for me (still a newbie) it seems to be more of a progression.

Sometimes though, while trying to head copy letter by letter and get the word together as it comes in (e.g. with the WORD chapter), some words are recognized instantly after they are complete, "out of the blue" with no effort.
