One of the snags with adding characters one at a time is that one develops a familiarity with the early ones. Also, I find that I have a particular problem with certain characters, not necessarily the early ones.

It would be good to be able to chose ones own list of characters (without disrupting the main training sequence) so as to get some extra practice with a high rate of the awkward ones.

By the way, my experience is that I recognise difficult characters OK, but slowly, thereby disrupting recognition of what follows (something that would confound any automatic attempt to spot problems).

.... or perhaps to be be able to specify a bias so that known awkward characters turn up much more often.

The custom character sets should be helpful to practice certain characters intensively, but of course it would get boring quickly if there are only a handful of characters which are troublesome.

I guess some kind of weighting of characters should be implemented.

- The easy thing would be to change the probability of characters in the lessons so that the latest letters are more likely to be used in the groups. But this doesn't help if the letters you have trouble with are a few lessons ago.

- The difficult way to do it would be analyzing the input and - depending on the error rate for each character - try to increase the weight of the probability of it. Sounds intriguing, but it's quite difficult to implement and detect reliably which letters were actually wrong in a group.

- A more realistic (easy to implement) way is to let the user figure this out by himself, and let him/her change the probabilities of letters manually. Not sure how to implement this easily; I could see a page with sliders for each letter where the probability can be set from 0 to 1 or something like that.

Another point on the TODO list. I need holidays :D

Fabian,

it might be easier (both for the user and yourself) to simply set "focus" characters in the custom mode.

I usually know which characters I want/need to practice and could choose them myself (additional checkbox for higher probability of focus characters).

An probability for all focus characters together might be sufficient.

Gruß,

Gerd

P.S.: Personally I find it ok that characters to train appear with same probability. Just takes a bit longer to get fluent but good training, too.

Suggestion: Keyboard menu shortcuts (so user can keep hand on the keyboard) with "New Attempt" being the default, selected by hitting the Return key. (I hate mice as much as I hate microphones.)

Many thanks for this site, Fabian.

The "Play/Pause" buttons, some "Submit" buttons and links to "New Attempt" now automatically have the focus when the site loads. It's not all finished yet, I will add some more enhancements to make it even easier to use the keyboard instead of the mouse.
