Nonagenarian, what you say makes a lot of sense. Thanks. But even so, it can give an indication of the effort put in 2,000 keystrokes is not the same as 400,000. It’s not about fooling yourself.

JP, be carefull using Morse Machine, Essential in copying Morse code is 'pipe lining', which means that you decode while you receive the next character(s). Otherwise only very slow speeds should only be possible, due to reaction time used to decode and type or write the received character before the next characyer is presented.

Agreed. MorseMachine is great, no doubt, but using it too often can be positively counterproductive. The brain gets used to unlimited and undisturbed detection time, and this bad habit is a huge obstacle in learning head copying. (BTW, there are quite a few similar traps in Learning CW.) Maybe some score based on detection time and accounting for mistakes might make sense, but I'm not sure.

MorseMachine has helped me during the learning of the 40 characters in the lessons. I sometimes use it for specific groups of characters when I’m lagging in instant character recognition. For what you mention about head copy and pipeline copy, I find group code and plain text training more useful, as they force me to copy without gaps.

I’m currently at 27/20 and still having some difficulties with copying. I started CW about a year and a half ago.

Very good congrats, but in order to prevent that you copy real sounding Morse code at 27/27 after a long time, you better try now to go to 20/20 and use it on the air.

I use MorseMachine to practice distinguishing between easily confused characters at higher speeds. Above 30 WPM distinguishing between "h" and "5", or between "b" and "6", can be tough. So I setup customize sets with those characters mixed with a few other and gradually increase the speed. Seems to work for me.

I use Morse Machine briefly every day as an exercise to keep me from forgetting numbers and punctuation. I see it as a practice tool not a testing one so the idea of a score is not relevant, ditto recording the amount of effort I put into it as I already know that (not sure I'd want everyone else to :-) )
