I know how code speed is defined in terms of PARIS. But what is the definition of REAL speed [as in "Use REAL speed (not PARIS)" found on the Code Groups page]? It appears to be MUCH faster than what we normally mean by Morse code speed.

REAL means actual characters (or words, one word contains 5 characters) sent per minute, without Farnsworth etc.

If you actually send "PARIS" for one minute, REAL and PARIS should yield the same speed.

If you have on average longer letters (which typically the case for random groups) and still want to squeeze the same number of letters into one minute, you need to increase the speed above what PARIS yields.

To take it to the extreme, if you select a custom character set and only allow the character "0" (zero), the program will increase the speed by a factor of more than two to fit all zeros into one minute.

"REAL" is the system used at international High Speed Telegraphy Championships. In ham radio circles, usually PARIS is used as the reference.
