Thread: Morse Code with Light Option

How many out there would like to see an option on this site of using light. Besides using your sight verses audio, there is still something different in decoding Morse code with light transmission. In addition to most of the audio selections (such as speed, code groups, etc.) We could have choices of size, intensity, and even color of the blinking light. The Navy still uses light transmissions in cases of radio silence. Thoughts? Ideas?

I can only decode lights ( or .... . .-.. .-.. --- etc ) easily if I turn them into sounds.

Good thing it's mostly slow . .

I expect most people on lcwo are hams . . . so probably not so much interest, but probably useful in an emergency

Speaking of light being slow, I have noticed that my SOS distress beacon for my boat repeats SOS about every 13.3 seconds. That translates to about 3 WPM. I have read that the upper limit for light transmission is about 12 WPM.

yes, two guys are involved in reception, the first one watches the light signal and speaks out the character, the second one prints it out.

Interesting point that light transmission is slow as GeoFlo - George Flory pointed out. Also interesting that the upper limit is about 12 wpm. But still, I would like to see a Light Option. Since there's not much interest, I might want to write the program myself. Does anybody know what computer language is used to write these programs such as the LCWO?

It's open source . . .

It's trivial to add such an option to the Morse generator which drives this site (jscwlib). I just implemented it, and added it to the example site:

https://fkurz.net/ham/jscwlib/example/jscwtest.html

Any text you enter and play, will be shown by a flashing yellow bar at the top of the page.

Here's the change: https://git.fkurz.net/dj1yfk/jscwlib/commit/177ac5b20d01bd020dacbd0b1a6a949b113bdeb9

Any HLL language will do, like Java, C and so on.
Type in your text and the lamp will transmit it, in Morse code at the desired speed. Hnowever you need an interface, a relay or whatever betwee a computer. like a Raspberry Pi and the Aldis lamp.

A strong classic bulb needs time to glow on and off, for that reason they use shutters, opening and closing them with a Morse key for passing the light or blocking it.

However your eyes are slow in on/off recognising, About 16 times per second on/off is already seen as continue on with a lower brightnes. That is less than 20 wpm Morse code speed. So the speed limits is obvious.

I remember somewhere on the Internet an Aldis lamp option is presented in the form of a square white or black.
