Thread: iPhone playback problems

Back to the Forum

Posted: 2018-09-15 18:45
Regardless of what length of time I set for the lessons the playback cuts off about 1 min in. When I submit my result you can see that there’s much more to be sent but it just stops. I’m using the safari browser on an iPhone. Anyone else have the same issue?

Just timed it, takes 1:16 until it cuts off mid character.

Posted: 2018-09-16 20:22
The same problem arose for me today (Sunday, 16 September, 18:00 UTC). Playback started to cut off at lesson 19.

One can hear a soft click when playback stops.

I am using Safari on an iPad.

I’ll try a different browser and report again shortly.

No luck. I tried Chrome and FireFox — same problem. I also tried changing the CW settings (>wpm, eliminated pause at start), but that did not help.

Finally, I changed from HTML 5 audio to Flash and embedded audio. Still no change.

I’ll check my desktop computer later and report.

No problems or issues using Chrome on Windows 10.

Despite the (presumably) iOS problems, this site is so awesome it's hard to complain.

Yet the problem has been noted here, and hopefully will get some attention when possible.

Hi Patrick, thanks for replying to the thread. Yes everything you said and the problem solving approach you took was identical to mine. I’d like to practice in my lunch break at work and this is stopping me I’m afraid.

Hi guys,

would those with access to an affected device please try if the same problems occur on these CW players? The file should play for about 2:05 min.

Thank you!

Hello Fabian, did my feedback help at all?

Kind regards

Posted: 2018-09-19 11:08
Yes, thank you! But I am still pondering on what to try next. Stay tuned :-)

Thanks Fabian, excellent support and much appreciated.

I have not tried using my iPhone recently, but also hope to be able to us it at lunch if the glitch has been fixed. Any progress?

Did you try embedded MP3 as play option?

Posted: 2018-12-22 05:57
I also have the same issues. I did try to embedded MP3 option as well as opening the MP3 link under the normal audio player. I still have the same issues. No issues from my computer on Win 10.

I believe this is a problem related to running the webpage in safari, and there isn't a current solution.

Posted: 2019-01-06 21:25
I'm getting the same in Safari on a Mac.

Posted: 2019-01-22 03:18
Today I tried a few more times. I am finding that if I hit play and then click on the lesson link again a few times and then finally play and run through the lesson it seems to work just fine.

Posted: 2019-10-09 18:26
Is there found any working solution?
Not that it bother me that much, I can figure out the 10% error myself. But it would be nice when the statistics/graphs give a correct data.

Posted: 2019-10-10 02:11
I'm on lesson 7/40 using Safari on a MacBook Pro. I have my sessions set for one minute but the audio cuts off before the last two sets of 5 characters are received. I tried logging out and back in and resetting my laptop but nothing works. hope it gets figured out.

Same problem for me on an iPad with Bluetooth keyboard. Disconnected Bluetooth keyboard and tried native iPad keyboard with same result. Also tried different browsers (safari and Firefox) with no success. I would really like to practice anywhere with the portability of an iPad. I do have a desktop Windows PC and will try that next using Chrome. It’s a shame Apple devices don’t seem to work.

Posted: 2019-12-08 18:31
Can you try specifically if the problem still persists in the Koch Course Lessons? There I added a period of silence to the end of the files (about a week ago), if you are using the Safari browser. This is now yet active for the other practice options, because before I roll it out for everything I'd like to receive feedback from someone using Safari if it helped.

Posted: 2019-12-09 08:56
I'm a PC/Windows 10 User. I don't get all the characters in the file on the first pass. Now that there is a 20 second silence, I have to wait 20 seconds before I can run that file again, which is tedious.

I understand the problems of the Mac guys so please could we have a "back to the beginning of the file" button as well?

Posted: 2019-12-09 09:17
I only added the silence for Browser identifying as Safari, but apparently Chrome, since it's based on WebKit also contains "Safari" in the user agent string :-)

Now I am checking for Safari and not "Chrome". Hope that works.

Thank you, Fabian. That's working fine now. A very swift response as usual - you're a gem!

Hi all,
This is still a problem in iOS, i tested on ipad latest update and all browsers.
Any ideas?

Even if I generate 5 cw mp3 links they stop after a minute or so. (On ipad, iphone i mean)

Posted: 2020-03-03 11:45
I just testet with my up to date iPhone. It played Code Groups to the end without any Problem.

Posted: 2020-03-03 20:17
hmm.. I dont has anything special on my iOS.
I tried on iPad with safari, chrome and firefox.

I cant think of something to test/debug. Any ideas? (btw on my ipad it looks like a "stream" not like a predefined file)

I am still a problem on my iPhone 6s ios 13.3 using the chrome browser.

Posted: 2020-04-15 04:22
This is still a problem with iPad. I’m on iOS 13.3.1 and it cuts out the last few seconds (I’m at 20/7 and I miss exactly the last two sets of 5 characters each time).

I am just in the process of completely changing the way LCWO generates the Morse code sound. Here's a preview you can play with:

It'd be interesting if all users (especially those using Safari :-) can play the sample text (PARIS for one minute) without any problems, after pressing the "Play" button.

Also, feel free to play with the parameters and hit "draw" to get a graphical representation of the code and its timing.

(No, this is not meant to encourage people learning code visually, but in the parameter settings dialog, this will make it clearer how character speed, effective speed and word spacing are related.)

This is obviously a work in progress and I have just spent an hour on this so far.

Hi Fabian,

the test link is not playing here - Safaris is Version 13.1 (15609. on macos Catalina 10.15.4

The Safari play problems on macOS always was intermttent - more often that not code groups played to the end, but not always.

If it helps you testing could borrow you an iMac on 10.15.4

Thanks Gerd,

could you try again with Safari, please?
I made some changes that I believe will fix this problem.

If anyone else could test this (on any device, not just Macs), I'd be happy to hear the results.

For iPads etc. it may be required to touch the first button before the sound works.

This thing I am working on generates the audio in the browser, on the client side, which (if it works reliably) has a lot of advantages over the current implementation, where the browser downloads a MP3 from the server each time.

Posted: 2020-04-17 10:06
Fabian, it now plays 20 x PARIS with macbook / IOS

Posted: 2020-04-17 10:13
Also plays 20 x Paris on IOS 13.3.1 / Iphone 10

Posted: 2020-04-17 15:34
Thanks, Gerd, very good to know.

I will continue the development of this and then we hopefully soon have a solution that works reliably on all platforms!

Posted: 2020-04-17 15:42
masOS is OK. (latest safari update)
iphone latest update no sound (i also try clicking the extra button)
ipad no sound.

The link worked for me on my IPad with safari and chrome.

Posted: 2020-04-24 17:32
Interesting, quite different results. I will keep working on this and might solicit some more feed back soon. Thanks so far!

Posted: 2020-04-28 18:24
treebabys response got me thinking too.

My iOS devises are basic setups. nothing special.

New test... brand new iPad pro. Chrome.

Lesson stops around 2 groups before the end (2 mins total lesson).

I cannot think why others said its working for them...

Probably because they use one minute lessons?

Posted: 2020-05-08 18:53
It is often working for me, not always. Same Macbook Catalina & Safari up to date sometimes works, sometime doesn't

Posted: 2020-05-08 19:14
HH, no 2min lessons. Double checked.
I remember the 1mins problem discussed so Im confused too.

Posted: 2020-05-22 19:01
Just tried a 5 minute lesson on my iPhone5 / safari and sound broke off after about 1,5 minute.

With which player? Did you try the "Experimental" player from your CW settings?

Posted: 2020-05-23 00:37
The Experimental payed it all 5 minutes. Great, thanks Fabian!

Posted: 2020-05-23 06:43
Thanks for the feedback. I will soon make this the default!

Posted: 2020-06-17 00:24
I have the same problem using the Koch trainer with the lessons finishing too soon and reporting errors for the last minute or so. I tried on my iPhone and on my iPad with the same result. Safari brouser iOS 13.5.1 IPhone 8+

Posted: 2020-06-17 07:48
Panqui: Go to your CW settings and try selecting the "jscwlib" player option!
