Viewed a you tube video of the 100 most common words in the english language-There is also one on the 500 most-

Is it wise to learn these by listening to the words in cw or to learn and identifying the letters and what they spell-I do not know if I am clearly stating my question but as an example "home" should I identify the 4 letter group as sound or take each letter as it comes and spell it in my head

It is wise to listen to and decode LOTS of good quality morse at a speed tending towards the fastest you can manage to read.

Slow down if you are tired.

Try various audio frequencies.

You may need to have a larger gap between letters and words to start with - it is probably better to keep the letter speed to 10wpm and above, tho YMMV.

You will find that inevitably you come to recognise certain words
and
at higher speeds you may find you can only recognise whole words.

Don't keep timing yourself unless you find you are good at decoding and just want to speed up as soon as you can.

My advice would include spending $10 on an mp3 player and making up some mp3 files so you can listen in the car etc

Practice practice practice - never give up.

Don't compete with anyone or the clock unless you find youe have that high-ish aptitude for decoding . . .

Good listening - and enjoy learning if you can . . .
