Thread: Callsign scores not registering

Hi Fabian -

fyi I just completed a 'Callsign Training' run, and I had logged over 7,000 points with one callsign to go. Although I did miss the last callsign, the 7,000+ score did not register on the toplist. I will stop using 'Callsign Training' for a while, in case keeping that run as the 'most recent' one helps you debug it. That run was completed just 10 minutes ago at 1221 UTC today.

However the site had no problem registering new high speeds on 'Code Groups' earlier this morning, so it seems whatever the problem is, it's limited to 'Callsign Training' only.

Hi Ken,

I changed the method with which the callsign training results are transferred to the server. After finishing, the entry field should disappear and it should be replaced with an output like:

Added score to the database.
Position in highscore list: x
Your best result in the highscore list: y

The score is then submitted to the server in nthe background. There may be some problems with older browsers (in particular Internet Explorer 6 and earlier) with the automatic submission of the results. Did the entry field disappear, and a message like that above appeared?

If not, it would be helpful to know which browser you are using, so I can hopefully reproduce and fix this problem.

Fab -

In my case, I don't see the 'Added score to the database' line, or the 'x' or 'y' results at all. After the 25th callsign is entered, the program just flips me directly to my 'home page' and does not even display the final score of the run just completed.

Also I just noticed that the most recent score saved in my home page under 'Callsign Training' is from May 22, so none of the runs I did this morning seem to have been saved, either.

I have been runnning the Dell version of Internet Explorer 7 that came with my Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista purchased Nov 2008.

Also I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox Version 3, but that's even worse - after the first callsign in 'Callsign Practice', it flips me directly back to my home page again ...

There is indeed some problem with the Internet Explorer (just verified it with IE7). I am investigating it -- the change in the callsign training was indeed done around May 22nd, but I thought I had verified that it worked with all browsers back then... Anyway, I hope to fix it quickly.

Firefox 3 works fine here (both on Windows and Linux). Just make sure that JavaScript is activated, but that _should_ be the case by default...

Oddly enough, after some tries it now also works with IE7. This will be fun to debug :-)

It only failed once here (first time I tried), but I might blame that on my poor Wifi connection (and resulting timeout of the request made in the background). After that it worked reliably with IE7.

I'd like to get some input from other users who use the Internet Explorer, positive or negative.
There are lots of entries in the database for callsign training (about 50 so far today) so it doesn't seem to be completely broken :)

OK - I anyway I upgraded to IE8 today. Will give 'Callsign Training' a try with IE8 tomorrow and perhaps that will clear it up.

Also on Firefox 3 it appears Java is already enabled, but 'Callsign Training' still does not work. Is there a specific 'switch' in firefox (pop-down menu) I need to enable?

Thanks for the quick responses today!

OK, I hope it'll work with IE8.

I Firefox it _should_ work with the default settings, as long as you have the Flash player installed. If it goes back to the main page, does the URL bar then read "http://lcwo.net/?callsign=" or something similar? It'd also be helpful to know if there is any output in the Error console (in the menu: Extras -> Error-Console) generated.

Just tried IE8 with 'Callsign Training' and got same result: after the run was finished, the program switched me directly back to my LCWO home page, never gave me a score result, and did not log the attempt.

Also I downloaded a fresh version of Flash Player after installing Firefox, but also got identical result (no score logged).

There were 4 messages in the Firefox 'Error Console' which I have clipped in below.

Hi Fabian - fyi still experiencing same above error. Also today I noticed if I kill my browser by hitting 'X' in top right corner but forget to 'Logout' of LCWO first, the LCWO site still thinks I am logged in ... 73, Ken

thanks for the QSO last weekend; I was at DA0HQ on 20m CW.

After some debugging I noticed this: The error message you pasted shows the domain as "http://www.lcwo.net./", i.e. an extra dot after the "net". Does it actually show up in your browser like this? And what happens if you remove the dot? (i.e. just go to http://www.lcwo.net/)?

If it works then, I think I know what the problem is and it'll be easy to fix: Most browsers restrict reloading dynamic content for websites to the domain of the original page, i.e. "www.lcwo.net". Reloading data even from "lcwo.net" (i.e. without the www) would not be permitted. The reason for this is to prevent Cross-Site scripting attacks, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting ). Of course it'd also fail with the additional trailing dot.

I considered the possibilities of using "www" or not in the URL, but not a trailing dot... :)

So, in short: Please try accessing LCWO simply via "http://www.lcwo.net/" without a trailing dot, and let me know if the callsign training works then.

About the logout: If you just leave the page your callsign/login will time-out after 10 minutes or so. Technically there is no real need to click on "logout", it just reduces the time-out interval to zero..

Another update: When I tried using a domain like "lcwo.net." in Firefox, it was automatically corrected to "lcwo.net", so I couldn't reproduce the problem this morning.

It seems to be one of the things the (otherwise very useful) "NoScript" plugin does automatically, and after disabling it, I was able to reproduce the problem.

I'll modify the scripts to allow for these things, but the easiest fix is just leaving the trailing dot away :-)

OK, eliminating the 'dot' seems to fix the problem.

Nice to see you had the 20-meter CW 'assignment' - you must have had some pretty good runs! You guys were loud in Geneva. IARU is a funny contest, since you only know who you really talked to after the contest is over, with all the HQ stations :-)

Final request: Kody and I are changing callsigns. KB3RUP will become K3ODY, and NV1P will become KE3X. Can you update those calls/logins on LCWO so our scores and history are maintained?

Thanks and see you in LZ in September, Ken

Hi Ken,

glad to know it's working now; it bothers me that I didn't see the trailing dot when I first looked at the error output...

You can change your callsign/user name on LCWO yourself on the "Edit account" page. The changes will immediately be reflected on the highscore lists and all of your practice history will be untouched.
