Aeronautical navigation aids broadcast Morse code station identifiers (3 to 5 letters) at 7 wpm . If I need to learn Morse code only for the purpose of aeronautical station identification should I start with the recommended speed of 20 wpm or practice the goal speed of 7 wpm?

Do not limit yourself to copying 7 wpm aeronautical signals (it will put you to sleep). I would recommend learning code at 20 wpm, the mind works better at this speed. This will also build in a comfort zone at copying code and reduce errors.

Learning code at 20 wpm will open a new world of amature radio communication and a vast world of social contact and networking (if you have a license).

No,

Start at 7 wpm with Morse machine, part of this website, and keep using that speed. The calls are repeated so incidental errors are no problem at all.
