Just a couple of random thoughts on the random settings:

When a random tone is selected, I wonder whether it'd be better if it didn't necessarily change the tone for every group, but instead played a few groups at one tone, then a few at another? (Where "few" might be a random number between, say 2 and 7?)

And for random group lengths, might it b better if there was some weighting so that the shortest and longest group lengths were less likely than the mid-length ones?

the latter suggestion sounds good. About the tone, I am not sure if that makes much sense. I'll think about it.

The group lengths in the random mode are now a little "rerandomized", with 5/4-letter groups more likely than 3/6-letter groups, which are in turn more likely than 2/7-letter groups.

I'm not convinced this is working all that well, at least regarding the longer groups. I often seem to get lots of 7, 6 and 5 character groups with almost no 4, 3 and 2 character groups.
