Hi Fabian. first of all I would like to thank you for an excellent site. I really enjoy using it for practicing morse code. Together with the RufzXP program this is my favorite to practise morse code. I have one suggestion for the Word training option. Would it be possible to make an option of practising the most common english words, where you select how many of the most common words to practice on?. Instead of selecting option of the length of the words, you could select the number of most common english words to practise on.

Bright idea,

However in order to implement it you need a set of the the most common used engels 10000 words sorted on probability of occurance.

Is such a set available?

Another idea may be to omit the noise in possible score.

Everybody has his good and bad days in copying Morse Code, however when you get a set of 25 words presented and the total number of characters in that set of 25 words is between a and b, with a 40% smaller than b, then your graphs are not really representing your bad and good days but mainly the difference noise between a and b.

That is an easy problem to solve, but nobody complains about it :-)

Uni Leipzig offers ranked lists of the most common words:

There are several lists available on the internet showing the most common english words, sorted on how common they are. My idea was to take the 1000 most common words, and use this list for word practise. By focusing on the most common words, we can train on identifying them as words rather than strings of letters. the user could start with the 50 most common words, and as they progress increase the number of words, and thus build up their vocabulary.

this sounds like a good idea to move from letter to word recognition

Hi Allan. That was my idea. It would be a good way to practise recognising words as the next step up from letters.

OK, mni tks fr the URL Cosmo.

I did take a look at it, it seems to me pretty raw and outdated. It contains words in pluralis and singularis separate, there are a lot of abbreviations like DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation :| ). mr and mr. are separate entries, and names like Reagan (missing Obama :)

But afterall, thinking abt the sorted list, when you are used to the first 500 words and wishes to add another set of 100 the probability of occurance of the added words is pretty low, so the next wish will be to select a set of words with sequence numbers 501 thru 599.

How about downloading that list from that URL in the language you want, and making your slice selection (starting word and number of words) with an editor and translating it with the ebook2cw program from this website, in order to create a MP3 file with your specific selection?

Great idea!, Hurrah fer Fat

I really appreciate this website. I am making great strides in learning code because of it. As I get better at letter recognition, I also have been looking for ways to hear "words" rather than letters. I have a suggestion for Fabian.

AA9PW, Simon Twigger has a feature on his web site http://aa9pw.com/morsecode/ that generates random QSO's at user selected character and word speed.

I have found working with this a big confidence builder. The more I listen to it, the more I am hearing words, and I think that a similar trainer would be a great addition to Fabian's site.

Again, THANKS to Fabian for the great website he created. Just want to be helpful.

6,000 most frequently used English words:
http://www.insightin.com/esl/

I compiled a practice file from this list using Fabian's Ebook2CW.
Each word is repeated 15 times with extra interval between words. Every two weeks I increase speed for this practice and currently at 38 WPM.
Looks like I now hear some words as a whole.
At the same time my sending and working copy speed is 20-25 WPM.

You may give it a try. Very fun practice!

Hi Andrey
Thanks for the list. The ones I have seen usually only lists the first 1000 most common english words. This one is very nice..

FatherAbsinthe:
Your idea of making MP3 files of the words are good. I used to make MP3 files from the 100 most common words using the G4FON Koch Morse Program. JustLearnMorseCode have a similar option. I still would like to have implemented the word training option initially mentioned. Your note on probability of occurance when adding additional sets of words is correct. Maybe an option of selecting ranges of common words would be a good option. You should be able to set the range you want, both how many words, and which range.
