Is there any way to connect my straight key to my computer via the serial port or some other port to practice my sending, so that LCWO will receive it and display what I am sending? Or should I use some other program that is out there?

Hi Greg,

I wired my straight key in parallel with left button of an old mouse.

Then, I moved the mouse pointer to the "Key" area of screen, and can now tap on either of the left-mouse-button or the straight-key.

I have boxes of old parts :)

Mouse still works like a mouse. :)

I also would be interested in a way to practice transmitting.

I happened to have a old cheap mouse with a broken mouse wheel. I took it apart and with an ohmmeter identified which two of the three contacts showed continuity when the now exposed left button was pressed. I soldiered a wire to each, and those wires lead to my straight key. I also removed the laser (didn't know if it would still work, but it does.) Now, both my regular USB mouse and the partially disassembled CW USB mouse work fine together.
